2009 STUDENTS

ONE IMPORTANT POINT - DO not be afraid!! . Our painting courses are fun, relaxed and rewarding. You go at your own pace and your tutor is encouraging, patient and non judgemental. For all we know you could turn out to be better painters than us - so we are not here to judge - just to give you excellent teaching and professional help.

We can and DO get you painting professionally because the courses are very cleverly AND ORIGINALLY(!) crafted and you use the best professional materials.

WELCOME - We Really Look Forward to seeing YOU!!

EVERYONE IS VERY DIFFERENT AND WE ENCOURAGE AND DEVELOP THE REAL ARTIST IN YOU.

We create 'professional' paintings with our professional teaching and techniques - many of which are not in any art books!!
Look at this!!

"Thank you thank you thank you for a great weekend, I thought I was stuck in copy and follow mode from boring painting books which fill the shelves of Waterstones. Getting out of the bookshop and into your studio is the best choice I ever made. I feel you have opened a whole new world of possibility for me and my painting. More More More I will be back" Stephen

BEGINNERS STARTER 12/13/14th December

A very interesting weekend where we were going to do the great landscape (far right in the photo) but the rest of the group requested to do the 'lavender field' on the 1st day.

The 2nd day - the students chose a variety of form.

This is the student's finished picture - not quite finished in the photo above! Clever isn't it?

We want to take this opportunity to wish all of our Students a really Happy Christmas and a Great new Year.

Alex in Spain also wants to say high to all our students in the UK and hopes one day he will see you in Spain!!

See you somewhere in 2010!!

A 3 day student with her 1st day landscape painting. This artist was clever enough to 'adapt' the photographic inspiration by putting in some water. Which is just perfect for the scene.

A 3 day student with her STUNNING painting! Note the background 'recedes' and the light and shade + colour choices make the painting 'very real'

BEGINNERS STARTER 28/29/30th NOVEMBER

Lovely weekend with a great group.

Three students were on a 3 day course.

Very moody tropical landscape!

Work still in progress

Obviously inspired by Cezanne! Great inspiration and you can learn a lot from studying famous artists.

BEGINNERS STARTER 21/22ND NOVEMBER

Our first day's painting

Autumn landscape - all BRILLIANT!!!

This was composed from imagination - brilliant!
The important thing about 'compiling form' is to make sure the composition is very good. And just look at the brilliant story this painting gives you

Beautiful ammonite in acrylics and oil sticks. Wonderful tones of brown, highlighted with white oil sticks and a peachy background to heighten 'fragility'

BEGINNERS STARTER 21/22ND NOVEMBER

WHAT an extraordinary weekend.

All Beginners but full of excitement, interest and passion and all with very strong ideas of what they wanted to say in acrylic on canvas.

And what a fantastic job they all did. Lovely weekend and the lone male was SO tolerant! Thanks Lee & ladies - great weekend!

Composed from imagination - fantastic!
Another great journey!

Again composed from imagination - WOW! Another great story, another very good composition (You have to realise none of this is attainable without your excellent tutors!!)

A beginner? Totally amazing!

This student made three paintings from the same photographic inspiration - which is a great process. The first 2 paintings were in acrylics and the last painting was in oils. So a very good foundation for some 'comparative analysis'

DEVELOP YOUR STYLE - 14/15/16TH NOVEMBER

Great weekend with 6 on the course.

Very intensive with Caroline really 'pushing' the students
to think about their mission and concepts!!

It's good to understand 'traditional techniques' before you can move onto 'contemporary'

Dreadful photo - sorry (sun was very strong!)

We really believe in 'Bringing Out the Artist in YOU!' - so this student was encouraged to use 'collage' as Caroline recognised this was a good development for this particular student

This student understood about being 'interpretive' - which requires 'vision'

WATERCOLOUR - 7/8TH NOVEMBER

Well now!! What a fabulous weekend. We STARTED OFF doing watercolour but then decided it wasn't 'expressive' enough for 6 students and switched to acrylics!!

This student is a watercolourist but wanted to be
more 'expressive'
- so we switched to acrylics. Great job! (It was also Rememberance Sunday!)

Another 'expressive artist who decided acrylics
was better for him
. Again he created a working drawing
and then - from sketches - compiled the painting on the
right
- it is really well painted

This student created a 'working drawing' first and then
created the painting. Wonderful!

There may seem like a lot of 'still lives' on this page
- but they really are the best to learn composition,
tonal values and colour balance.
This example is excellent!

This student stuck with watercolour and did a very good job!
The other two students didin't feel their paintings were progressed enough for a photo!!

BEGINNERS - 24/25th October

We are using a new 'inspiration' An 'Autumn' landscape.

BEGINNERS -September 26/27th- click for course

Sorry about the shadows - such a fantastic weekend both weather and people wise!! Lovely strong style.

Beautifully seated and very very good perspective

More horrid shadows - sorry! Pity because these look very delicately painted. Proportion good and painting very very good.

That vase is just brilliant!!

Very good placement and composition and great colours!   Sorry - more shadows - that pesky sun. Looks like this student is creating a very unique style!   Lovely proportion and paint work. Clever choice of background.

19/20th SEPTEMBER GET CREATIVE

Super dooper talent this weekend with each student very focused on what they wanted to create.

Glorious!   This rose is called 'Peace' and we were looking for fragility and calm!   Sensational painting from a wonderfully perceived photograph. Brilliant!

STARTERS - MID WEEK - SEPTEMBER 9/6TH - click for course

The nicest of groups - really delightful and everyone had a lot of talent. Caroline saw their potential and gave them a lot more information than the basic 'starter' course because she knew they could take it all in!!

Our Lovely group with their first day's 'learning process and technique' landscape painting

Isn't this just delightful. Really good paint work and a great composition.

Not the concept we started with and the trough was
added at the last minute - so we know it needs a lot of work!

A very lovely composition

This artist has a very very good understanding of
paint and composition. Brilliant!

There was a really great 'concept' with this painting
This artist really worked at her painting and created
a great work of art!

DEVELOP YOUR STYLE - SEPTEMBER 5/6TH - click for course

A fantastic weekend where we had three returners. All of whom have also been to our Spain Studio. Plus a disabled artist, two ladies from Ireland and a gentleman who is a musician.

Sensational colour and paint work - on a very difficult subject.

Geraldine (a returner)painted her triptych (3 paintings) outside! (It was a great good weather weekend! and our location is a bit of a sun trap!)

Adventurous, exciting and well painted   Wonderful stylised landscape   Isn't this just glorious? Work in progress. As you know not every artist wants their 'mug shot' on the web site!!

STARTERS COURSE - August 23/24th - click for course

As you will probably know from reading the web site - we like to get new, 'starter' artists painting a 'still life' on the 2nd day but we also want you to paint what you want to paint. (You have to be passionate!) - so if you have a particular image or drawing you want to paint on the 2nd day - bring it along. You can't run before you can walk - but we help you do the very best you can!

1st day's painting is a wonderful landscape
that teaches a lot of things. Perspective, tonal values,
focal point, how to lay paint, brush marks etc.
The 2nd day this artist tackled water - very difficult
- but he has pulled it off!

How interesting is this - fantastically painted with a
lot of texture and some pretty good colour balance.

Every artist is interested in different images.
This painting has a lot of softness and yet very
linear lines - very interesting concept.

Both of these are quite naive and how interesting
he has gone for a relaxing and charming sea scene
whilst she has gone for dramatic line and colour!

Work in progress but very beautifully done.   Crikey - look at those clouds and the wonderful tonal values - Brilliant!!   Very moody - both paintings!

STARTERS COURSE - August 15/16th - click for course

The fantastic group - there was one last minute,
unavoidable cancellation

BRING OUT THE ARTIST IN YOU!!

1st and 2nd day's work

Very painstakingly painted -

Very beautiful, delicate touch

Great concept - this was 'the group' - representing their lives.
Concept GREAT - by the third course the painting will be sensational too!!
Have you noticed that everyone does something totally different - although working from the same 'inspirations'? Proves that everyone has the ability to be an artist - as we all interpret and paint differently!   Wonderful strong style

STARTERS COURSE - August 5/64th - click for course

Midweek course - this was our first mid week course which we put on because of demand - it was full and we had 3 people on the waiting list!

Our lovely, cheerful, talented Group

How interesting is this - fantastically painted -
with no 'snatch' marks - that is very
very good control of brush.

Isn't this just totally beautiful? Very, very clever
brush strokes, tone and atmosphere.

'Really chuffed' is what this lady said and she should be!
Brilliant painting - I wish you could see how brilliant
the stem of the ivy is!

This is quite a difficult subject for a starter (human form takes a lot of study) but this artist has done very well.   This lady is more used to pottery and fashion than paint but she very quickly established a very painterly style..   Isn't this glorious? Wonderful composition, strength of line and colour. Well done!

AUGUST 1/2ND STARTER WEEKEND - click for course

It's always great to have a male on the course - come on males - where are you! (We give you a great lunch - as well as great tuition and great materials, and great service and .....- sorry showing off!)

Isn't this totally charming? Very good perspective,
colour and tonal values.

Lovely 'soft' background with the strength of
the human form on top - obviously painted ' back to front'
- which is traditional but there are other ways of composing!

Just look at the combination of blended space
and detailed space - quite extraordinary
for a beginner!

Great contrast of subtle background and strong form.
Almost 'Kandinksy' who is recognised as the
first 'abstract' artist. He painted his abstracts in 1912 .

This artist is showing her first day's work which has wonderful vibrancy and the perspective is pretty good too!   We talk you through about how to create a still life and show you examples. This painting has wonderful delicacy!   Isn't this just fantastic for a starter?

JULY 25/26TH GET CREATIVE

We can only give you so much teaching in a weekend and there is so much to learn - so the 'Get Creative' course takes you a little bit further than the starter course - but it is good for artists with some knowledge and we cover the basics again on this course. Great composition, tonal values and focal points.

Sensational painting of our Watermill!
This was created from a 'working tonal drawing'
which we do on location - in charcoal and
then the painting is made in three tones in the Studio.

Lovely painting which has explored blending
and tonal values.

Great brush marks - developing a real style   Moody. soft and quite lovely   Wonderful detail and tonal values

JULY 11/12th OIL PAINTING

We can only show you 'alla prima' or 'all in one go' method of painting in oils during a weekend. We take you down a very professional road with the first session being about blending and method.

Work in Progress

Completed!

This is our 2nd session where we paint a still life in colour and learn about how to make colours darker and the three (basic) tones you need.   This is the 2nd day's choice of the artist's subject and very lovely.   This artist is already developing her own style and has vision. Very adventurous!

JULY 4/5TH BEGINNERS

One lone male again(!) It was lovely Richard who is a returner from the watercolour course. It was suggested he would enjoy acrylics more and he did!!

Isn't this totally charming? Very difficult for a beginner
- you need some very good drawing skills for this subject!

Wonderful composition, colour and paint work.

Again - quite exceptional for a beginner!

It's so brilliant - the 'vision' our artists have and
with our teaching can then put that vision onto canvas.

Yellow is the thinnest of pigments and needs to be painted over white or brown - or combined with a stronger pigment colour. This artist has pulled off this yellow painting extremely well.   There is nothing boring about landscapes!
Especially if you can do them this well!
  Fantastic for a starter

JUNE 27/28TH - GET CREATIVE

We give you a series of 'photographic' inspirations on the first day of this course and explain how to 'get vision' from the subjects.

This lady is a returner - all the way from Liverpool(!)
and her painting skills keep getting better and better

This artist said 'I came away with a new sense of purpose
and a whole new dimension to my painting. The tuition was
encouraging and direct without being intimidating or
opinionated and the high quality of materials made
the whole process a real pleasure'
Thanks Ed - keep painting!

On the 2nd day of the 'Get Creative' course
we offer you the ability to paint in either acrylics or oils.
(Providing you have some experience of oils)
This is a very textured oil painting.

Yes! You are a star! P.S Love the shorts - this is how all
artists should be dressed!

Wonderful work for a weekend!   Ah Ha - the 'drip' technique - very difficult to pull off!   Pretty good light and shade

JUNE 13/14TH STARTER

Such a good group that we are showing you both their 1st day's painting and the 2nd days

First days session - the landscape - NO-ONE paints it the same - brilliant!

"2nd day's painting - the still life. This artist has chosen
to paint the whole thing but her way!

Well now - what a lot of talent. Are your SURE
you didn't bring that in from a Gallery?

The talent continued in this stunning still life.

You see what I mean - NO-ONE paints it the same way!

Part of the still life - a beautiful Iris.

Another interpretation of the landscape

Fantastic vision!

Wonderful confidence and strength

Again that strength and confidence of mark
is coming through

It's possible we've got our photos mixed up here
- so apologies - I THINK this was from this artist's
2nd weekend. Sorry but GREAT painting!!

This is definitely from the 2nd day start course
- just brilliant!

Another great interpretation of the 1st day's landscape

Isn't this lovely?

1st day's landscape - not all artists finish -
everyone goes at their own pace.

Probably inspired by Monet!

Mapledurham House - clever girl!!

Wonderful - great painting!

It is so good when artists explore their own and new vision   This really works and the colours are very good.   Again - exploring your own visions! Excellent

MAY 23/24TH WATERCOLOUR
