SOME NOTES ON ART MATERIALS

ACRYLIC PAINT

There is no mystery about paint. All paint starts with a pigment (the coloured powder) In the olden days pigments were from organic material but nowadays most pigments are synthetically hand made.

The 'BINDER' is what gives the paint it's special qualities. A synthetic 'polymer' is added to pigment to make acrylic paint.

GOOD ACRYLIC PAINT will be 100% lightfast pigment and 100% binder. Amsterdam (Holland) Golden (USA) and TriArt (Canadian) are some of the BEST acrylic paints.

BAD ACRYLIC PAINT will contain chalk or talculm powder to 'bulk' out. These paints are chalky and fade and dry out 'whiteish'.

amsterdam acrylic paint

Amsterdam Acrylic paint is a great 'Starter' - flows well, retains wetness for a long time and is 100% colour fast.

OIL PAINT

The 'BINDER' is what gives the paint it's special qualities. Linseed oil is the general binder for oil paint.

GOOD OIL PAINT will be 100% lightfast pigment and 100% binder. Michael Harding is one of the the BEST oil paints. Van Gogh (Holland) is the oil paint we love.

BAD OIL PAINT will contain chalk or talculm powder to 'bulk' out. These paints are chalky and fade and dry out 'whiteish'.

Van Gogh Oil Paint

Van Gogh oil paint is great - flows well, blends well and is 100% colour fast.

WATERCOLOUR PAINT

The 'BINDER' is what gives the paint it's special qualities. Gum Arabiic is the general binder for watercolour paint. Honey is a great additive

GOOD WATERCOLOUR PAINT will be 100% lightfast pigment and 100% binder. M Graham is one of the the BEST watercolour paints.

BAD WATERCOLOUR PAINT will contain chalk or talculm powder to 'bulk' out. These paints are chalky and fade and dry out 'whiteish'.

REMBRANDT watercolour paint is very good.

BRUSHES

SO important to use good brushes. Over the 40 odd years Caroline has been painting professionally - she has tried every make of brush and DaVInci always come out best.

LOOK AFTER YOUR BRUSHES It's important to look after your brush, clean properly and 'dress'. (We show you how).

SYNTHETIC OR HAIR? Hair brushes are only used for watercolour. A synthetic bristle is necessary for oil and acrylic paint.

DaVinci - in our opinion the best brushes

CANVAS

There are many 'supports' you can paint on from wood to aluminium but Canvas is the general support used by most artists.

A Professional artist will make their own canvases (ask us to show you if you are interested).

We use Royal Talens canvas = which is a very good canvas

ROYAL TALENS are good canvas

PAPERS

For watercolour - there are many makes and types.

Start off with a 140lb weight at least - saves you having to 'stretch' it. And start of with the 'Not' - a smoother paper which is easier to apply watercolour paint.

OIL BARS

WOW! What a great product. A bigger, meatier oil stick.

Winsor & Newton has a great range of good quality oil bars.

BLACK GRAPHITE AND COLOURED PENCILS

A ''Pencil' usually has a wood covering and the material inside - anything from pastel, to watercolour medium.

Pencils range from 9H to 9B

H is the hard range - B is the soft range

You always use a 2H pencil to draw out for watercolour - leaves a good mark - easily erased - anything softer and it is messy to erase.

Faber-Castell are one of the oldest pencil makers, Derwent Cumberland are the UK's oldest pencil maker

CHALK & CHARCOAL

Chalk is a natural product which comes from the ground. Great for working on colour paper. Even gridding up or drawing out on your underpainted canvas.

Student who 'chalked out' her composition.

CHARCOAL

Charcoal is made by setting fire to wood and depriving of oxygen. Great for drawing as you can get light or intense marks. Needs fixing and is very messy!!
